Case Study: Fixing the “Leave in P, Visit Workshop” Fault on a VW T6.1 DSG Gearbox

This fault is typically caused by a failure in the gear selector microswitch, which unfortunately cannot be replaced separately. The entire DSG selector needs to be replaced to resolve this problem.
Our Diagnosis and Repair
- Diagnostic Scan with VCDS
We used our trusted VCDS diagnostic tool to scan the vehicle. The diagnostics revealed that the gearbox couldn’t detect the selector’s position, confirming the microswitch in the DSG selector was faulty. - Replacing the Gear Selector
To replace the selector, we removed the lower dashboard and installed a brand-new DSG selector unit. A critical part of this process is ensuring the selector cable is adjusted correctly—if misaligned, the shifter may spring back to N (Neutral) when placed in D (Drive). After adjustment, we ensured smooth and accurate shifting. - Final Testing
Once the new selector was in place, we cleared all fault codes and tested the van through all gears. It’s essential to drive the van and shift the gearbox through all gears to ensure the system fully registers the new selector and clears the fault. After completing this process, the repair was successful, and the van was back to full functionality.
