At Professional Retrofits Ltd, we had the pleasure of welcoming Eamonn, a returning customer, back to our workshop. After previously upgrading his VW Transporter, Eamonn brought us his stunning 2007 Porsche 997.1 Targa 4S for a sleek and modern lighting transformation. The project involved replacing both the front headlights and rear taillights with premium aftermarket versions.
Step-by-Step Process: Flawless Installation
This retrofit required precision and the right tools to ensure a perfect fit. Here’s how we approached it:
- Front Bumper Removal: Accessing the front headlights meant carefully removing the bumper. This step involved unscrewing approximately 10 screws located underneath the bumper. Unlike many vehicles, there were no screws in the wheel arches, just a single screw on each side going upwards. Additionally, three screws under the bonnet secured the top of the bumper. Finally, a spring-loaded bracket at the front, where the bumper meets the bonnet, had to be released. To release this bracket, we first lubricated it to ease the process, then used long-nose pliers to carefully pull it out. This unlocked the bumper from the wings, allowing it to be safely removed without any damage. Interestingly, even for something as simple as changing a bulb, the front bumper must be removed—a quirky yet challenging feature of this Porsche model. If you ever need assistance with this, we’re more than happy to help!
- Headlight Replacement: Removing the headlights on this Porsche required a special tool from the Porsche kit, which is included with every vehicle. The tool is an exceptionally long 8mm socket. First, we removed the rubber bung covering the access point. Next, the tool was carefully inserted into the hole—a task requiring patience due to the distance to the bolt. Once the front bumper was safely removed, we proceeded to fit the new headlights to the bumper, ensuring a perfect alignment and secure fit.
- On the passenger side, the bolt is turned counter clockwise (towards the rear of the vehicle) to release the headlight.
- On the driver’s side, the same counterclockwise motion is used.
- Rear Taillight Installation: Replacing the rear taillights was a quicker process, requiring no bumper removal. Each taillight was secured with a single Philips screw in the corner. Once the screw was removed, the taillights were gently pulled out and replaced with the new aftermarket units, completing the process in just 10 minutes.
