This VW Transporter Side Assist retrofit gives the van a serious safety boost with radar-based blind spot and cross-traffic monitoring. The full system was fitted and coded to work just like a factory-installed version—perfect for drivers who want extra protection without switching vehicles.
What This System Does
Ever wished your van could spot cars hiding in the blind spot? Or alert you to traffic when reversing out of a tight space? That’s exactly what this retrofit provides. The upgrade uses factory-style radar sensors and mirror LEDs to deliver real-time visual and audio alerts—just like you’d find in newer, high-spec vans.
What We Installed
This wasn’t a simple plug-and-play job. To install the system properly:

The rear bumper was removed for radar mounting

Radars were installed on both rear corners

All wiring was routed to the front using factory grommets

Mirrors, dashboard, and instrument cluster were taken out for access

Everything was connected to the van’s main BCM (body control module)
Once wired in, the system was coded using VCDS and VCP to activate the alerts in the instrument cluster and mirror LEDs.
How the Driver Benefits
With the system live, the van now gives:

Rear traffic alerts when reversing out of tight spaces

Audio warnings for approaching cars or cyclists
