VW Transporter T6.1 Heated Steering Wheel Upgrade – Golf Mk8 R & Passat B9 Compatibility
Want warm hands on cold mornings? A heated steering wheel makes a huge difference! This VW Transporter T6.1 Sportline from Redditch came to us with a Mk8 Golf R-Line DSG steering wheel already fitted. But the heating and DSG buttons weren’t working.
A Full Retrofit – Not a Simple Swap!
This upgrade takes more than just fitting a new wheel. To get everything working, we had to:
✔️ Remove the steering wheel to install the right wiring
✔️ Strip out the driver’s side to access hidden components
✔️ Modify the Body Control Module (BCM) for proper signals
✔️ Do complex coding to activate the heating and DSG controls
After the retrofit, the heated steering wheel works perfectly. You can turn it on using the steering wheel button or through the stereo. If your Transporter has a digital dash, you’ll also see a heating icon and confirmation message pop up.
Compatible Steering Wheels
For this upgrade, we used a Golf Mk8 R-Line heated DSG steering wheel, but a Passat B9 heated DSG wheel also works. Both are great options when installed with the right wiring and coding.
Is It Worth It?
This upgrade costs over £1k, but for comfort in freezing weather, it’s a game-changer. If you drive your van daily, a heated wheel is worth every penny!
